About This Tool

The Flex-Hone tool, originally developed by Brush Research Manufacturing, is designed to deglaze cylinder walls and create a plateau finish. This innovative tool, introduced in 1972, has earned numerous nicknames such as ball hone, dingleberry hone, bead brush, glaze breaker, and glaze buster.

Flexible honing with the Flex-Hone tool produces an oil-retaining cross-hatch pattern and a true plateau finish, free of cut, torn, or folded metal. This tool is suitable for any type or size of cylinder, with abrasive bead style brushes available in standard diameters from 4mm to 36 inches. Nine abrasive types, including silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, boron carbide, and diamond, are offered, allowing customization for any base material. Eleven grit selections provide precise control over finish parameters.

The elimination of peaks on the cylinder surface leads to rapid ring seating, improved oil control, reduced seepage in hydraulic and pneumatic applications, and enhanced seal performance and longevity. Successful applications extend to firearm chambers, shotgun barrels, musical instruments, combustion chambers, air compressors, pumps, valve bodies, valve guides, brake cylinders, and wheel cylinders, among many others.

Flex-Hone tools are also highly effective for deburring cross-drilled holes, port radiusing, and edge blending. Its unique construction ensures it is self-centering, self-aligning, and self-compensating for wear, eliminating the need for elaborate setups or special training. Deburring can be integrated into the machining process for a complete cylinder finish in one operation or performed as a secondary operation with consistent results.
