All that is required to programme the VCR is one push of the Smart Dial Timer button and the VCR display shows the selected date, time and channel. Turning the timer button one way or the other can change each of these factors and, once completed, a final push of the button sets the VCR. All this without having to switch on the TV.

• •The Sony SLV-SE810G video cassette recorder is a capable, easy-to-operate player for those looking for something extra. The SE810 is aimed at those searching for a high-quality player, and at those who want a video recorder to partner with a camcorder. At the heart of the SE-810 is a four-head system and a host of picture-enhancement electronics such as a digital signal filter and a "Reality Regenerator". The result is a clear, stable and vibrant picture. One niggle is the lack of auto tracking, which can mean extra button pressing when using less than perfect retail tapes.
• •Naturally, it has NICAM stereo sound and will playback NTSC tapes on a standard UK televisions, which can be very useful. It's easy to set up with a very helpful manual and a clever auto set-up mode. For the more involved operations there's a set of editing functions, including sound dubbing, and there are front-mounted inputs for the easy connection of camcorders. One area which has always caused problems with video recorders is setting unattended recording. The SE-810 has all sorts of clever features here and a multitude of different ways of doing the same job. You've VideoPlus--still the simplest way. You also have PDC, which is more intelligent, and syncro-recording for SmartLink televisions. For the more traditional method of programming it carries what Sony call a Smart Dial Timer, which enables you to quickly enter the times and channel number in one simple operation.
• •Sony's Flashdrive motor is a lively affair and capable of rewinding an E180 in a minute. It can also find the beginnings of separate recordings automatically, which is a boon when you've half a dozen episodes of something on one tape. The SE-810 proved itself a capable player with more than enough functions for more serious uses.
