- •Colour: red. The TrackPoint is a kind of small joystick that is embedded in the middle of a keyboard (always between the keys G, H and B) and takes over the function of a mouse. It works similar to that of a joystick: the more you press it in one direction, the faster the cursor will move in that direction. The principle of operation is based on the use of strain gauges, where a constant tension is applied. Each touch of the TrackPoint changes the electrical resistance of the corresponding strip for the duration of the touch. The resulting voltage changes are converted into digital signals by a downstream integrated circuit. TrackPoints are used, for example, in laptops. Advantages of a TrackPoint compared to a touchpad are that you do not have to remove your fingers from the keyboard for cursor control and that your finger will always stay in the same position: unlike the touchpad, you don't have to move your finger around, constantly lift it and put it back on for larger mouse movements.
